Use Case | Powering Saudi Arabia’s Digital Health: Lean’s API Evolution to Apigee X Hybrid

Lean Business Services, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the national enabler of digital health and wellbeing transformation , plays a central role in shaping Saudi Arabia’s connected healthcare ecosystem. Through national platforms that connect government entities, healthcare providers, and ecosystem partners, Lean enables the secure and reliable exchange of healthcare data at scale, aligned with national systems and standards.

To support this mandate,  AppyThings partnered with Lean to strengthen, modernise, and secure its vast API ecosystem , enabling the smooth management of more than  25 billion annual API transactions  across  30 internal  and  15 external entities . Working collaboratively, both teams focused on ensuring continuity, resilience, and future readiness across one of the region’s most critical digital health platforms.

Project Introduction

Lean’s API platform serves as the backbone of national healthcare connectivity, supporting more than  25 billion API transactions annually  across  30 internal  and  15 external entities . This scale demands uncompromising reliability and close coordination between platform owners and technology partners.

To support continued growth and future innovation, Lean and AppyThings jointly embarked on the evolution of Lean’s API infrastructure, transitioning from Apigee OPDK to  Apigee X Hybrid . The shared objective was to enhance scalability and future readiness while maintaining uninterrupted national service delivery.

From early planning through execution, both teams worked side by side to ensure that the transition strengthened the platform without disrupting mission-critical healthcare services.

AppyThings & LEAN

The collaboration between AppyThings and Lean was built on a shared commitment to reliability, governance, and long-term sustainability. Lean provided strategic direction and deep ecosystem understanding, while AppyThings contributed specialized expertise in hybrid API platforms and large-scale migrations.

Together, the teams designed and implemented a modernization approach that preserved national service continuity while strengthening performance, security, and operational resilience.

This close collaboration enabled informed decision-making, rapid issue resolution, and a migration process that reinforced confidence across technical teams and national stakeholders alike.
